With debut album A Sense of Danger arriving on 29 October, Southeast London’s The Pixel Rain offer its final advance single this Friday, 2 October. ‘Glitching Sky’ pushes Áron Siegler’s electronic influences firmly to the foreground, bringing futurepop and contemporary electronic references including VNV Nation and Chvrches into the synthpop and synthwave vocabulary already established across the project’s earlier work.
At the centre of the song is a character retreating from an unfulfilling reality into a virtual world where they can construct a more powerful version of themselves. For Siegler, however, the idea extends beyond any particular technology or online space, reflecting more broadly on the increasingly commonplace ways people seek distraction and escape from anxiety, disappointment and everyday life. Áron says:
“The idea came from thinking about someone whose real life isn’t giving them very much, so they retreat into a virtual world where they can be whoever they want to be. There’s something quite sad about that, but also something a little ridiculous, so I wanted the story to have both sides to it.
“I deliberately left the virtual world undefined because I think that kind of escape can take a lot of different forms. I’m certainly not outside of it myself. We all have things we disappear into when reality gets uncomfortable.
“The music is quite fast and energetic, but the song itself takes its time building. That seemed to fit the idea: you don’t necessarily notice yourself getting drawn further and further into these little distractions until they’ve started taking up much more of your life than you intended.”
Accompanying ‘Glitching Sky’ is a visualizer created by Sophie Maria Vickers, drawing on the song’s virtual setting and digital imagery.
Founded by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Áron Siegler, The Pixel Rain emerged from Southeast London’s underground scene with a self-titled debut EP in 2023. Drawing primarily from electronic music such as synthpop, futurepop, and EBM, Siegler’s songwriting combines layered production and dark atmospheres with occasional excursions into the more guitar-driven territory of post-punk and industrial rock. A Sense of Danger brings these different strands together across the project’s first full-length release.
‘Glitching Sky’ is the final advance single from A Sense of Danger, an album exploring power, authority, consumerism and social unease through recurring post-apocalyptic and technological imagery. The single arrives on Bandcamp, Spotify and all major digital platforms on Friday, 2 October, followed by A Sense of Danger on 29 October.
