WE GOT LETTERS 1995-2001 from the printed pages of MK ULTRA Magazine

M.K. ULTRA:
If M.K. ULTRA is related in any way to the MIND KONTROL ULTRA program governmental research program with which all documents related to LSD experiments have apparently been shredded – – then its readership should be deeply disturbed and enamored by Extextures hallucinogenic drive, ambient fields mediated by suggestive abstract, paranoiac machines dwelling contemporary within my cephalic domain. Please allow space within one of your publications for Extexture to publicly thrive and exist independently of Drain the Doves. Although most would classify this phylum of sound collage as ambient. I prefer the tem “Exo-ambient”.. Chemically- influenced frequency convulsions, of a peripheral nature, DNA reformatting nature and neural-circuitry available upon request.

Hey M.K. ULTRA:
I’m from Indianapolis IN home of the 500. I think your magazine sucks. What is this Devil Worship?
Why don’t you run a good Christian article? Ya’ know something we could all feel good about. Jesus. Love. jHappiness. Bright colors. Not this dark and gloomy stuff. It’s sad & makes me want to cry. Anyway, hopefully you’ll improve your magazine. More mainstream stuff., something we know about. If you ever stop by this part of thecountry, ya’ll stop by and say hey!
(no name)
My Dear Alex,
I am very impressed with your magazine — I was intrigued to find that there is a paper available in my area that deals with people like me! The Children of the Night need a voice and I do believe they’ve found it —

M.K. ULTRA,
I grabbed a copy. Very cool. I love the gothic look. The interviews won over my cynical ass. It’s hard to believe M.K. ULTRA is from Indy (’cause it’s so good)
I had to smile at the Ransom Note ad. They have an amazing catalogue.
How many punks does it take to screw in a light bulb? 10. One to screw it in, and nine on the guest list. What has six legs and two heads? Nirvana.

Alex Zander/M.K. ULTRA,
Just picked up issue #4 last weekend. Was pleasantly surprised to find a magazine of this type out of my own boring city (india-necropolis) After reading the Pup (Skinny Puppy) interview, I thought you’d be interested in some of the shit I’ve been downloading off of the internet.
This is one of the best local mags I have ever seen. Hope to see more.

Alex,
Hi. I really love M.K. ULTRA. It’s hands down the best underground publication I have ever seen! My favorite articles were the interviews with Marilyn Manson and Thomas Thorn. I was nicely surprised with the article on the KISS convention and greatly appreciated your open letter about what happened at the White Zombie show. I was pissed off as hell about that too. Those fucking security bastards just wanted everyone out so they could go home. I can’t wait for M.K. ULTRA, #5, but I suppose for now I’ll have to.

Dear Mr. Zander,
I’m an old fart. (54 years) and not into the alternative music scene, et. al. However, I find your ‘zine to be truly alternative. We needed something in old ultraconservative Indianapolis. I like reading the poetry page. …I thought S. Kelly’s work is showing promise… Also, comic page is a good idea… a bit too kinky for my taste, but appreciate none the same. Shows promise also. The artist, I think, should work in some humor along with the decadence. Okay, who am I to criticize? That’s not the intention of the letter.

Alex Zander,
In all of society’s perversions (infomercials, MTV, talk shows etc), it never surprises me how this decay is so rapid. I try to comprehend the changes in this bloody war and I understand their fear. Mankind has NO conception of pain, or agony, of death.
Only a few of us know the truth in pain, or agony, of death. We are a Pariah among men – I live in a world where a celebrity is glorified for killing. My anger rises at the mere thought of their ignorance.
Our understanding, our…. ways of coping with pain, with agony with death-makes them fear us. Welive, though some wish otherwise. We love, though some find it hard. We feel, though some can’t feel it. We are the dark angels of man. Yes, we would rather live in darkness. Yes, we are grim. Yes, but we are just human.

Alex,
I think M.K. ULTRA is the coolest dam magazine I’ve ever picked up. If I can do anything to help sustain its life, I will. Meanwhile, here’s what happened when I picked up the new Skinny Puppy CD.
February 27, 1996 – Any Skinny Puppy fan will recognize this date as not only two days before leap year but also the day that “The Process”hit the shelves. The last account I had, was a release date set for March – as though we hadn’t waited long enough – but anyhow, it popped up a few days none too early….that blissful day that went something like this.
I rolled in after a 12- hour shift at the factory in none too good of a mood. A message says, “Chris, the new Puppy is out.” I pulled myself together after a massive seizure and maybe some internal hemorrhaging and dove into the shower. The highway had never seen the fury of my Geo until that night.I ran into Karma (records) and I slammed down my VISA (I only use my VISA in times of emergency – this was one of those times). I arrived home approximately one hour after hemorrhaging. I called my respected friends and said, I’ll call in an hour. ” Don’t bother me.” Ilit some candles, turned off the lights and positioned myself dead center with my speakers, clutching the jewel case. I was taken thru a multifaceted LSD trip by the masters. Shivering at times and dancing at others., – brilliant is what it is. Anyhow, I listened to it 5 more times., but not before recording it on a 90 minute Maxell. Why did I record it? For work. Wednesday was a nine – hour day and so, just as I clocked in, “Jahya” kicked in. Nine hours later, “The Process” was still rolling.
Thought you’d like to know,
Chris

In spite of the fact that there is no reasonable evidence of UFO’s there will always be a band of faithful followers, I supposes. Afterall, it is easier to believe in the existence of “little green men” than in the promises of politicians.

The Crown Hill Incident 1996
When M.K. ULTRA initially relocated to Indianapolis from Pittsburgh Alex Zander contacted Marty Davis, who retired from the Cemetery after 40 years in 2022. Mrs. Davis coordinated the PR as well as the Public and Private Tours and Events for the Cemetery. The call was to inquire into if M.K. would be permitted to conduct photography on the property which is privately owned. She encouraged us to do so and told us we could enter the annual photography contest, which AZ did. The photos were displayed at the reception a month or so later and the photos would remain property of Crown Hill after the event. After numerous visits to the cemetery the staff returned in 1996 for a publicity photo shoot. On that Sunday afternoon not only was the staff asked to leave due to our inappropriate appearance but the M.K. Kre were literally escorted by security due to our “inappropriate” attire.
When AZ phoned the offices the next day, he asked Mrs. Davis what was considered “inappropriate” and she replied:”…dressing in all black with black hair and lipstick was Satanic.” To put this in the proper perspective it should be noted that when Alex Zander told Mrs. Davis said that she had given permission over the phone to conduct photography; the reply was typical and somewhat humorous of Indianapolis attitude, “That was before I knew what you looked like.” This is something we were faced with in the region for the three years we were headquartered there.
We found this to be judgmental prejudiced and a blatant form of discrimination.
Crown Hill would occasionally send mail to M.K. ULTRA’s address to solicit donations.

Alex,
Your magazine is so cool. I love “Eulogy”. I’ll have to try my hand at writing one. I’ve written a few vampire stories, but they are kind of long. Maybe I’ll send you one. You might enjoy it.
I love your cemetery photography. I enjoy taking pictures of cemeteries as well. I can’t travel as far as you , but I’ll try and find unusual headstones. I’ve discovered some very extravagant headstones. Only for the”well to do” I understand. Many are comprised of hundreds of tiny mosaic stones.
I’m sending you some copies of some places that I’ve visited while vacationing. Hope you enjoy them. Last year we visited Salem, and the Salem Witch Museum and Burial grounds. You’ll also notice some castle pictures as well. The castle is in Gloucester, Massacusettes. They have candle lit Vampire tours. My family and I attended it. It was great! My daughter, Jennifer, was asked to do a reading of Dracula as Minna with “Dracula” The castle is said to be haunted. As they were reading their parts, bats flew overhead in the very dimly lit castle. It was incredible! The great pipe organ played eerie music. My family and I are continually searching for ghosts. I find them fascinating. Unfortunately, I’ve yet to encounter any first hand.
In response to the Crown Hill Incident, I think it’s ludicrous. Your complaint is well warranted. Inappropriate attire according to who or what? I’ve never heard of a cemetery with a dress code! Never have I heard of anything more laughable. When a loved one dies, and you want to mourn their passing, what do you wear? What would very proper, and all knowing Ms. Davis wear? Hopefully, for her sake, the same thing that people from all walks of life have been wearing for centuries. Black. Pure and simple. Black is a sign of remorse., and respect for the dead. Even the minister will be donned in black. I suppose that makes him Satanic. To think that the people of Crown Hill still seek donations from you is absurd. That takes a lot of audacity.
Without a doubt, Goths have the utm, opst respect and admiration for cemeteries. They hold them in high regard. Goths pay homage to the dead by honoring them.
I truly hope all goes well and that the matter is cleared up for you. I’m sure you will receive many positive responses to this discrimination dilemma. I wish you well and let me know if I can do anything to help. Keep up the great work!
REST IN PEACE,
Stephanie Walach

Dear Alex,
I am saddened to hear of the unfortunate incident at Crown Hill Cemetery. I have taken up cemetery photography as a small hobby since seeing the beautiful and sometimes humorous images that have appeared in your magazine. I however have never made my presence very obvious, and have never had to deal with any discrimination there. As for Ms. Davis, you can tell her that if a priest and some nuns walked into their cemetery, they’d be wearing black too.
Sincerely,
Matt Tyner

Alex,
I have just received your latest issue (my mom subscribes). I have finished reading your Loving the Dead article and I think it’s unfair for the people of Crown Hill Cemetery to ask you to leave due to your appearance, especially since you’ve been photographing their cemetery for such a long time.
Linking the color black to evil: satanic purposes is a big misconception that needs t be cleared up. When a black candle is lit, it symbolizes purification, protection and unity. When Wiccans wear black, he or she is donning the blackness of outer space. — symbolically the source of divine energy. Black is the absence of color. It is a protective hue and symbolizes the night, the universe and a lack of falsehood. Black is also worn while paying your last respects to a loved one who has passed on. So with this, I hope I have cleared up this misconception.
Jennifer Bennet

Dear Alex,
Regarding you and your staff being banned from a local cemetery…for what? Wearing Black> How crazy is that? And since when is photography illegal or even an unusual activity? Is wearing black and taking photographs in a cemetery considered satanic in Indianapolis? Should we all steer cIear? In some parts of the world (Mexico, for example) people find it perfectly normal to have picnics in the cemetery for heaven’s sake. What would be esituation if you had relatives buried in that cemetery? Is there a dress code for paying your respects to departed? This just seems way too silly. These people are obviously insane.
Loving M.K. ULTRA to Death,

Regarding the Crown Hill Incident. Answer their question. You are Satanic, just look at the bands you endorse. Quit hiding. Admit it.

Dear Alex,
Issue #6 EHC cover is the first issue I’ve seen thanks to a couple copies I picked up at Neo Tokyo in Columbus, OH. Very great and very “anti-trend”. Most impressive to say the least. I am also upset about Shane from EHC being killed in that auto accident. EHC played with Martyr Colony in New York awhile back. You should do a report/interview on their buddy Kent Moss AKA the Minion Project. He is truly an interesting fellow. Look into it if you can.
There is also a big expansion of Ohio Industrial?Goth bands you should cover including Martyr Colony, Azagoth, Queue Up, Scream Bloody Murder, Gossamer, UGSG, Lestat, Indian Rope Burn and others coming up in the field. Give them a story or two. If you claim to be the “anti-trend” you should really talk to these underground greats.
I noticed a somewhat snice attitude toward UFO/cryptozoology. Being a researcher with the PIC and independent researcher for years, I can tell you that it is all happening no matter how much you want to hide your head in the sand, it will affect you. There is amazing footage that is available that never gets seen that is put out by Video Dave and Mark Center that even most researchers probably have not seen. Once you start doing in depth research and get into the field you discover a lot and start to put pieces together. Before you start looking down on it all, try getting into it and doing things. You will see amazing things. I admit that a lot is bunk, but it is the real deal that keeps me doing it. The Philip Klass and Carl Sagan attitudes do not show real research and if they claim to do it, they would have no doubt what is going down.
I noticed you reviewed Charles Manson Superstarby Nikolas and Zeena. Good deal! Have you gotten their newest release Radio Werewolf – Lightning and the Sun? You can get most of their stuff through Glasnost in Germany or you can get it and their other CD’s through Metropolis or Isolation Tank.
The Misfits article was pretty cool. I met Jerry and Doyle at the Chiller Theater show back in October and they were the nicest people I met all weekend. Totally cool laid back guys. PJ Soles was probably the nicest. Everyone else seemed to be there for greed.
Your MTV commentary was true to form and on the bullseye. MTV is total sellout trash that ends up in cut out bins in 6 months anyway and then people never even admit that they were one of the bozos who bought the CD. I would rather see Cat Rapes Dog, Goethes Erben, Das Ich or Leather Strip on MTV rather than the dreck they show now, but since people are boing and passe, you’ll never see it happen.

Dear Alex,
What the hell is this Shirley Manson shit? She doesn’t look like she’d be the type of woman you’d be into. I’;ve never met you, but I’ve read M.K. ULTRA for a year. You sound like you’d be into Thrill Kill Kult Bomb Gang Girls or goths like Lydia lunch. What’s up?

Mr. Zander,

So, I ask you regarding Shirley Manso and Pamela Anderson. Who’d you pick?

Thanks very much for M.K. ULTRA. It’s a promise and a delight. It has a nice collective sense to music. The image that comes when I finish reading is of the tongues of rock-fire desend upon the disiples and their familes gathered in the house of Music. I associate speaking in other tongues with this event. An event that launched the world into ths powerful ministry: Alex

Dear Alex and the Staff of M.K. ULTRA,
Gracious thanx for M.K. ULTRA. Read it from cover to cover – I truly have never come across anything like it. In Maine, we have no Goth…scene whatsoever — there’s only about 25 of us in the entire state (no joke). If you”ve ever had the misfortune to visit this place, all you’d find are rednecks, Deadheads and illiterates. (I don’t live here by choice I’m from Rochester NY).
I saw an advertisement for M.K. ULTRA in a flyer passed onto me via a music promotor pen pal. Did you know there is a band using the name M.K. ULTRA in the Rochester NY area? I saw them open for King Missile in 1994. ‘Tis no joke! You might wanna’ hunt these guys down and find out why they’re using YOUR name.
Enjoyed the interview with The Electric Hellfire Club. Had no idea who these guys were until I heard about them on the Bob Larson show! (The news/talk radio station I work at runs Bob Larson Live.)Also, I adore the Misfits! Always have, always will! I’d love for you to do an entire issue dedicated to 80’s Goth, as my favorite band is the Sisters of Mercy. I used to spend hours in front of the mirror, trying to look like Patricia Morrison! I’ve never found any band to their equal since.
I’ve got a teensy-weensy suggestion: Would you consider adding a section for pen pals and email pals? It would be great to correspond with other Goths, especially for someone like me way up here in the Great White North. I’d like to make some friends, and find it quite difficult, being agoraphobic and in a behind-the-scenes professional as a radio DJ.
And Alex – don’t let them give ya’ too much razing for liking Shirley Manson. I think Garbage is one of the better bands out there and their music is a lot more melodious than this Generation X Seattle bullshit that’s clogging our airwaves today! I’ve enclosed a small article on your favorite redhead- enjoy!
I’m also submitting a few poems for Eulogy – they’re a little weird, perhaps, but what did you expect from the future lead singer of the worlds only Smiths/Morrisey cover band?
Blood and Black Roses,

Alex,
Once again, issue 7 was another great issue. I believe I did recognize you from the LA Fangoria show. It was a great time but my pals and I were going from that show to the Starcon show to the Hollywood Collectors show and Dark Shadows show, so it created a lot of turmoil trying to see everything. I just wish Simon Boswell would’ve hung around after the Chainsaw Awards.
Funny that you’re covering Damon Zex. He’s been hosting a few shows here and has been in the public eye quite a bit recently. You should do a lot more Ohio reports. As amazing as it seems, a lot is happening here that is very underground but could break at any minute. Still haven’t seen MACE. I guess their van broke down the night they were supposed to play with Martyr Colony at Kook Kats Club. You should also do a segment on Cult of the Psychic Fetus from Huron. They have an interesting Gothabilly sound merging with such camps as the Cramps, The Misfits and various other Goth influencers.
The Die Krupps interview was way cool. I enjoyed the show they did at Staches awhile back with Sister Machine Gun. The Stabbing Westward interview was also of some note. I kind of feel like they have jumped on the NIN bandwagon somewhat. I still remember when they appeared on Chase’s Cyberflesh Conspiracy CD a ways back. I never thought they would get where they are now. I was more or less rooting for Teknition or the Watchmen (now Society Burning).
Good interview with Brinke (Stevens). I’ve met her a ton of times and she’s always been pretty nice and very intelligent. Also have met Stuart (Gordon) quite a few times. He even came to Columbus for the Night of the Living Drexel (24-hour horror marathon).
Anyway, I can’t wait for the next issue to see what new and interesting gems of info you’ve come up with. I have the feeling you are going to go places with M.K. ULTRA.

Alex,
Thank you for M.K. ULTRA. As far as my feelings toward M.K. ULTRA, they are something like, “Where ya been all my life?” I honestly loved it! As you will read in my review in Nocturnal Revelations. I read M.K. ULTRA cover to cover and didn’t find a damn thing to bitch about! It was as if I was choosing what went into M.K. ULTRA.
I especially enjoyed the cemetery shots (Graveyards are an obsession of mine) and the 3 Type O interviews! Basically, I think you’ll be very happy with my review!
Incidentally I read a review of M.K. ULTRA in Mutant Renegade Zine. Well, that’s all I wanted to say. OI wanted to thank you and say I love what you’re doing there at M.K. ULTRA.

Dear M.K. ULTRA,
I suppose I would consider myself a well-rounded individual. I’ve led an interesting life that has taken me halfway around the world and back. I’ve seen things most people only see on a postcard. I’ve had my share of beer and cigarettes, broken hearts and loud music. Nothing surprises me anymore….with the exception of this city. What a shattered, miserable place Indianapolis is. The majority of the people I’ve met are prejudiced, scared little people. Where else in this country would a few cops make headlines by involving themselves in a fight outside of a bar downtown? What scandal. In New York, you’d have to get past the sports section to read of something so insignificant.
If I was still a teenager, I’d be so desperate for an escape that I’d probably be busted for skateboarding in Broad Ripple past curfew. There’s a stagnant scene here….such lack of creativity and passion that it feels like a room with no windows. But I’m certain we aren’t the only town like this. Somewhere there’s a kid with a couple tattoos and pierced ear who is immediately suspected of ripping off a bag of chips the moment he enters a convenience store.
There’s nothing for todays youth to look forward to. True role models are few and far between. And the people who you think are role models usually end up slashing their wives to bits after getting blasted on rhino dust. Kids hear about their future compared to a desert….bleak, dry, going nowhere. They hear about how the deficit is soaring, how they if don’t go to college, they’ll be nobodies, and how AIDS will most certainly kill them if a bullet from their 3rd grade classmate doesn’t.
Lighten up, conservative fanatics. We need to absorb life like the first day of summer. We have to look at what may seem different as a fresh outlook. We’re so afraid of being offensive that we can’t be ourselves anymore. It’s okay for kids to look different. Who cares if the music gets a little loud or if they want to paint their room black. It seems so much safer than playing Nintendo between hits on a crack pipe.

Garbage (via fax)

Dear Alex,
At last, a regional read devoted to the Gothic Industrial Scene. Where have you been all my life? But for the beneficent forgetfulness of someone at Outland in Columbus Ohio, I still wouldn’t know of your existence!
I most enjoyed your interview with Shirley Manson (you lucky sod) It’s simply too much to know that she’s not only devastatingly attractive, but Scottish! I suspect though that the equally lovely though less goth-y Gillian Anderson of X- Files has as much to do with the nationwide run on red hair dye as Ms. Manson does. TAKE NO SHIT FROM ANTI MANSON/GARBAGE SLAGGERS! Garbage is certainly a step up from most of the cookie cutter crap we’re subjected to. As for other Alterna divas, you might also consider the lovely Toni Halliday of Curve? Her vocals are pure sex on a stick, take my word for it.
Well, what else is there to do but fire off this letter of effusive praise, a $16 subscription money order and a request to keep up the good work.
Sincerely,
John McCluskey

Dear Alex,
Thanx for the last issue of M.K. ULTRA. M.K. ULTRA IS AN AWESOME MAGAZINE! I can’t wait to pick up the next issue. I read your review of The Azoic. Yes, that says it. The music is very haunting…Kristy’s vox especially. How does does she get her voice to do those things?
Please keep in touch and once again, THANKS.

Dear Alex,
I think it’s great that you put Shirley Manson on the cover of the last issue after everyone (well, a lot of people) complained about the Garbage articles prior. I can’t wait to see the reaction letters in the next issue! Most publishers wouldn’t have half the balls to intentionally (or at least willingly) piss off so many readers.
I can’t wait to get the video and the next issue as well. If you ever need some reviews or online interviews or anything, I would be more than thrilled to contribute to the maddest Goth read out there.

Dear Readers of M.K. ULTRA,
Not so long ago I had the opportunity to accompany your publisher on a weekend road trip to Columbus Ohio. I was sure it wasn’t going to be what you might call an average weekend. For me it would be my virgin – voyage into the realm called Gothic. Dark steamy goth bars, Black masses of sweaty people, unrecognizable music and an occasional human sacrifice were some of the first things that popped into my mind. A three-hour crash course from the Master himself, gave me a small taste of the Techno Industrial and Gothic music scene which I was soon to be thrown into. Upon arriving in Columbus, I was introduced to a man who from outward appearance seemed to be a workout – alcoholic jock. He was friendly and happy to see us and always had something to say….Anyway right before my eyes, he transformed himself from your average Joe on the street into Damon Zex. My cherry was popped. Now that I was with the “right people” it was time to go to the right place, OUTLAND!
The night’s performing artists were a group called THE AZOIC. Their music pierced through the humidity like the lasers that accompanied the show. And the only human things I saw sacrificed was sweat on the dancefloor and a few random brain cells to alcohol. Unlike theater where the actors assume their roles and play their parts. here the audience completed the cast. With everyone dressed in the Egos Personified, including the really cool staff at OUTLAND, the stage was set, the lights dimmed, people crowded closer as the music began its funeral dirge for the eyes gone blind. A haunting voice swelled up out of the steam and heat and grabbed me. I had arrived.
After The AZOIC finished their farewell set I was treated to something few people have had the privilege of doing, so I was told. I was invited “Downstairs” I was also sworn to secrecy about anything that was about to be said or done. But this secret must not be kept, the mystery must be revealed. We were all turned on and we all loved it. Yes, readers we were all turned onto air conditioning, beautifully cool relaxing no more sweating. Air conditioning. Truthfully, I wasn’t sworn to anything and most of the swearing I heard was directed toward the heat.
If you ever accidentally wander into a Goth Bar like OUTLAND asking for directions to the interstate expect anybody there, patron or employee to be exceptionally courteous and helpful getting you in the right direction. The only problem you might encounter would be a lack of understanding M.K. Phraseology. These might be some helpful hints for you. If the first thing you hear is “Get High or Doe” don’t worry, this is just a commonly known Damon Zex phrase that really means “Hi, come on it.” If the first thing you hear is “Satan Rules”, no problem this really means – the boss is busy right now, but he should be back in a few. If you hear “It’s the shits” don’t worry about the food, it just means “Groovy”.. If the first thing you hear is “Eat the Devil’s Pussy”, no problem it really means “This is a great place to party. Are your parents coming too? “Eat the Devil’s Pussy” really means “Party till you puke” or “Have a nice day”. If the first thing you hear is “Fuck You!” it really means “Fuck You!” You’re probably not at OUTLAND and should leave immediately.
All the people I encountered at OUTLAND were there to have fun and that’s’ exactly what they did. No guns, no knives, no fights and no jealous boy/girl arguments. If these are our future leaders, I can’t wait!
Unvirginally yours,
Peter Bishop

Zander,
Just want to let you know the magazines really going to shit! Youshould try being a little more objective. Do me a favor and don’t print anymore of my reviews. I don’t want to be associated with your rag.
You;’ve been described as a megalomaniac who holds court and promotes his own self interests, and I’ve got to admit you really fit the description pal. Sorry. Why don’t you just call the magazine M.K Alex? I mean, you may as well.
The new format is better but that’s about the only good thing I can say. The rest of it is going to shit and I guess you’ve got to fuck you to become assistant editor. That’s about all have to say.

Hey, I picked up a copy of M.K. ULTRA at Xila’s here in Cincy and I must say it left a mark man. I’m not much into goth stuff (I like some death metal but thats about as close as it gets) but I do dig your zine. Especially the personals: I laughed si hard I almost pissed myelf!
I’m sending you a coule of poems just for kicks. I have three self-published books of poems out and am all about giving them awy or trading for soem cool stuff….like beers and other peoples zines.
Anyway, I must jet, but I;ve decided you MUST get back to me. (in this life for teh next) I’m especially interested in the “Alc-O-Holiday” and your ad gives all the info except what fuckin day its on!
Hope to hear from you soon,

Alex,
Hello there. I just picked up your magazine at a local Karma (Records) store. I’ll admit I only picked it up to make fun of it. You see, I have a fanzine that I’ve done here in Indiana for nine years (Cryptic Static-formerly Pharmaceutical Follies formerly Zinage) and we recently put out a “Goth” issue. Naturally, I wanted to hate your magazine. When I saw you schmoozing with Shirley Manson and Lycia, I chuckled. Ok, I admit when I’m stoned around one in the morning I tend to listen to Lycia and Switchblade Symphony a lot, but on the whole, I find the post-Bauhaus Goth scene very Spinal Tap-ish. The first two times I flipped through I guess I was busy laughing, but this morning I stumbled across the Cheap Trick interview. Far out, right on and out of sight! This is the interview I would have done. Bravo. I am around 5 years younger than you but Cheap Trick 79 was my third concert, (KISS Love Gun and Dynasty tours being one and two) I cherish true rock that is Cheap Trick and your article kicked me in the balls. I am so glad they are back. I hope they rule the world soon. So anywho, I wanted to tell you that hands down, your Cheap Trick interview was the funnest and most insightful I’ve read (recently) The sun came out ion my jaded little world. Thank you so very much.
Keep the Faith,

Dear Alex,
Enclosed are a few pictures for Loving the Dead. I hope you enjoy them, as much as I do. Also, how can I get a copy of Dusk of the Damned (VHS) ? I enjoyed Dawn of the Damned (VHS) so much I would like the follow up.
I love the feel of issue #69 a little more than the tabloid style of the other issues. Please keep up the good work and I look forward to the next issue of M.K. ULTRA. Happy New Year to you and the rest of the staff.
Thanx,

M.K. ULTRA,
Hello to you all!!!
Just a a quick note to say congratulations on the recent issue and good job! I’m glad to have a magazine that isn’t filled with a bunch of bullshit for a change. This is only my third issue and the only magazine I would read every page inside. Thanks again for your efforts.
Take care,

Alex,
Thanks for the current issue of M.K. ULTRA.I enjoy the new format very much as its less fragile and makes sharing a lot easier.
Bob Larsons ranting and raving about Marilyn Manson a lot lately. He should be happy about those that use Satanism as a marketing tool are keeping his radio show riveting by providing fodder for his speculations. I mean, his life and subject matter would be so mediocre without the existence of Manson and EHC in this country.
I really think you’re doing a service by giving exposure to Cleopatra artists.
By the way. I do live in a trailer. Don’t knock it too much. It’s the only way people in Maine under the age of 30 can become home owners.
As you can tell, the culture here is a bit different from the Midwest…all the rednecks here are living in public housing and are on welfare.
It’s a status symbol to own any kind of home be it a mobile or otherwise in Maine. My home was seized in a drug raid in Michigan. So, I got it cheapo.

Hi Mr. Filthy McNasty,
Thank you for those issues of M.K. ULTRA, I am hooked.
I remember meeting you while we were on the SEXTACY Tour. (I think it was the SEXTACY Tour) You and another guy were waiting outside the bus,and then you came on board and interviewed Levi and you and the other guy interviewed me Jacky and Groovy, you were very sweet and polite. (I won’t tell anyone) You gave us some issues of M.K. ULTRA and talked about The Electric Hellfire Club each of us sharing amusing anecdotes about Thomas. (Incidentally many years ago I was a bartender at a club called NEO and that was one of EHC’s first gigs) You were talking about meeting Thomas’ parents or something. Are you two dating? What did he think of your article titled “My Life With The Electric Hellfire Club”?
That particular tour was a boozy, I mean a doozy. This little recollection of mine is one of a very few since we had a very special relationship with Lords of Acid that happened to involve all kinds of ExtraCurricular activities, I think you get my drift.Strangely I do remember almost every show that we did on stage and performing went. However offstage and off days were a trip in every sense of the word.! I also agree with Lady Galore. Please be responsible when experimenting with anything.
I happened to cath Lords of Acid here in Chicago and it was good to see the boys but I was sad that Lady Galore was no longer in the band, I thought she was amazing though Nikki points out she wa “replacing” her for only the Voodoo U album and SEXTACY Tour. I enjoyed the show but I did miss Ruthie (Lady Galore) .
Anyway I thank you for all of your kind words, especially regarding “yours truly” ha ha and I plan to never miss another issue!
Bloody Wet kisses to you my sweet Alex Zander.

Dear Alex,
I just wanted to write a few lines and say thank you for M.K. ULTRA. I recently stumbled by the last few issues and was very impressed. Finally someone that writes about The Electric Hellfire Club. After seeing them play live in Nashville and meeting them afterwards I think they are the greatest.
Anyway its great to see a magazine that writes about REAL underground bands and not the MTV tendy band of the month. I early await the next issue and wait to receive Dusk of the Damned.

Dear Alex,
Just thought I’d write and say I love M.K. ULTRA. I’d like to compare it to something like Permission or Industrial Nation. It’s very well aid out. Its nice to see a mag being produced for the LOVE of music and not some corporate ass kissing.
Like you I HATE Indy and Indiana in general. This place is so damned backwards. The Mayor speaks out against racism, yet there are KKK rallies he;ld downtown. What the fuck?
Anyway ’97 was a bad year for me also.I was on the verge of suicide, bu someone saved me. The love of my life, Katie, is my reason for moving to the Bay Area in CA.
Besides, the scene there is big, unlike how it is here. I like the new format as well. The newspaper style was kind of annoying due to easy tearage. I hope you like the poems I sent in. Best wishes to you, Heather and M.K. ULTRA. May 1198 be a big success to you all there.

From ACHTUNG Letter from the Editor (Summer 1998)
M.K. ULTRA has spread its pages over the country with grand response, but still seems to be the focus of envy of local Indianapolis- area brooders. A little group of jealous diots have no better pursuits than to try to cripple something I continuously pour my soul into. A good friend of mine Michale McConnell has become so disgusted with their MK bashings that he wrote an open letter about the rantings. All I can say is that some people are so overwhelmed with jealousy that they do not know how pathetic they are. Please, GET A LIFE.
The Muncie Moth recently referred to me as a “poseur at best and a destructive psycho at worst” in an email blast to a group of locals. I guess I would be a poseur at best since I do not choose to masquerade as the bearded lady or as Damon Zex cited a Blue Meanie. And her buddy DJ Spectre who continues to spread false accusations about .K. ULTRA over the internet and lies that M.K. ULTRA is no longer in print and has even spread a lie that Intended to move to Chicago with the intent to take over all of Scary Lady Sarah’s (who is a dear friend) DJ gigs has never had the balls to say these things to my face.
That’s okay too, because the aforementioned DJ recently referred to me as a liar in public when I told people that Bauhaus would be playing in Chicago. .
In conclusion, when the smoke clears and the dust settles on crystal clear fact shall remain, this is M.K. ULTRA and a lot of people reading this around the globe know who we are. Please enjoy the new M.K. ULTRA and have a Dirty Black Summer.
SINcerely
AZ
To the Readers of M.K. ULTRA Magazine,
At this time I would like to take a few valuable seconds out of your life to share with you a great loss to our small and pathetic gothic community. As you may or may not know a man who has been severely instrumental in attempting to establish a scene for us all in Indy-no-fucking place will be taking flight shortly. Yes, sad but true but you only have yourselves to blame. Alex Zander and his lovely female counterpart Heather have decided enough is enough. One must ask oneself how much backstabbing, lying, game playing, stealing and two facedness one can take. This is all these two people have ever received from most of you clowns. When asked for support, you didn’t have the time. When asked for help you were too busy. When a band came to town you had no $$$. Alas, your humble writer of these words knows all of this too well as I have been the knight of the shadows for over a decade and have seen many a goth lose their faith and come to the conclusion that most of you are content with being depressed. Worshipping death, cutting yourself and putting on your white make – up and black lipstick trying hard to look like something out of Propaganda Magazine. You don’t even have a clue as to what the darkness is all about, nor do you want to find out. In the brief time that I have known Alex he has always demonstrated humor, credibility and integrity, but above all he is truly an alright person to share good times with who will do a favor for you by just asking and you’re not wondering six months later if he’s ever going to get around to it.
For those of you who have underestimated Alex’s talent, genius and his natural ability to sway from the norm I invite you to witness his up and coming rise of late night antics, chaos and intriguing mayhem in the city known as Chicago where I’m quite sure he will become as popular as white make-up.
So my dark brother I bid you farewell , not good bye for our association and newfound bond has only been born.
Michale McConnell

Alex,
Well, I have to admit…I’m a sucker for happy endings or in this case, beginnings…Just finished the new issue and it looks fantastic. All your hard work, money, effort, blood, sweat, shit (which, by the way your doubters are eating right now) and time finally paid off. And with your upcoming departure to Chiago, you’ll finally get the respect you’ve deserved all this time.
I have a great deal of respect for you and what you’ve done..something I always knew you were capable of doing. This wretched state has really held you down, and unfortunately, you have to dig to find the people that are able to bring out the best in you.
I wish only the best for you, though I don’t think you need any charmed luck. You’ve made it this far basically on your own. Hopefully it won’t always be that way., I think that with this latest issue of M.K. ULTRA, people will understand it’s more than just a magazine….it’s a phenomenon.
All the best,
Chris Weiler

Alex,
I just read the lengthy nonsense from DJ Spectre or whatever he calls himself. If he actually did not enjoy or have the time for such things then I don’t think he’d spend so much a great portion of his day typing up that dribble.
Grow up Matt..your wife left you for someone who looks better. The fact the entire Dominion crew and DJ Spectre and god only knows who else are banning against you only proves that their lives are completely bankrupt and devoid of anything that deserves any attention. I know first hand Moth gave us shit for hanging-out with you. How and why is it any of her concern? I never figured that one out. I personally don’t dislike Moth but she’ll not be the one to poita finger at me or my band, especially no longer than she’s known us. I can say with complete honesty and faith that if I told you that I still hung-out with Moth, and that she only keep teh Alex slam to herself, that’d you’d be cool with that. But that’s not at all the case, because she has decided that she is too cool to hangout with anyone who doesn’t hate you. I asked her in one email, “why is it that no one seems to dislike Alex as much as you?” to which she had no reply.
Take care,
chambers

The previous letter was in reference to a mass email sent out by some people from Indiana who slammed M.K. ULTRA and myself, however, it seems that everyone got it but us. Although it was forwarded to us right after it was originate, we feel no reason to defend ourselves. Our case rests in what you hold in your hands.
Alex,
Just wanted to say thanks to you for helping Kenny and Kinme out at the Ozzfest show in Indianapolis. I know your time is limited, but the help you gave was greatly appreciated.

Does Our Shepherd Wear Horns,
It was bound to happen. Sooner or later Mr. Zander was sure to turn M.K ULTRA.into one of those sophisticated glossy-cover publications. To his credit, he started slow. First he turned to a computer for layout, then he eventually got an email address (and kept it), and now there’s even an M.K ULTRA. website.
Now a;; this progress is well and good but I have to ask, “When will it end?” The next thing you know our beloved alternative magazine is liable to be in full-color, with gloss on ALL the pages just like…well you know…those other magazines. It chills my gothic blood to contemplate the future and to imagine M.K ULTRA.’s place in it.I see patients in waiting rooms leafing through its pages or, even worse, a telephone solicitor advising me I’d be smart to snap up this deal, Sports Illustrated, TV Guide and M.K ULTRA., all for one low amazing price!
Think twice about what you’re doing. Mr. Zander. Where are you leading us, innocent lambs that we are;;;straight to slaughter?Well, at least I’m sure you’ll be playing some appropriate background music should that come to pass. And I will try to take comfort in that, that and then thought I may someday be able to read the new, improved M.K ULTRA. before submitting to the dreaded annual pap smear. It could be worse, I guess, much worse – Body Accents could still be using extra copies as drop cloths.

Dear Alex,
Gardens of Stone. Clever, poetic title. Keep it. The old name, loving the dead, sounded way too schlocky, Alice Cooperesque. I’ve seen the Poe tombstone, complete with Raven engraving and five lines I couldn’t make out. That particular photo kind of got a brother doing some deep, introspective thinking. Then, a question took form: What would I want to leave as my last parting words, once I’m laid to rest? Since you have some fasciatin with final resting places for humankind, I figured, I’d let you have it.

Dear M.K. ULTRA,
Thanks for the MK even though I just sent you some stickers and maybe a dollar. I heard about it in some Michigan magazine they have at shows called Scetch. I really like the issue you sent, especially the review of the Zombie Bitches because that is really, really insane, and also the interview with that RockaBilly group The Amazing Royal Crowns. I saw them kind of recently in East Lansing, MI and they were a lot of fun.
Anyways, it’s a fun magazine and keep it up.

Dear Alex,
I enjoy your mag, M.K. ULTRA very much, especially the story on Ogre and The Zex Files. It seems as if the underground is starting to come alive. I just hope it doesn’t become too much of a trend. No need for a 12 year old Peter Murphy wannabes running around. I’m not from Longview, I just live here. As you may or may not know this town is full of bible thumpers and rednecks, sad, but true. Keep up the good work bad boy.

MK Looks great! I love the glossy cover. Man, you’ve come a long way since your first issue. Everything looks awesome. The Zex Files article was great. The cemetery pictures were great too., Now calling the poetry section Poetics Justice is good too. I like it.
FYI We found the most beautiful cemetery I have ever seen in Kensico NY called Valhalla Cemetery. There are many angels, deer and lion stones, magnificent mausoleums with marble walkways as well as lovely ladies guarding graves weeping over them and really exquisite gothic monuments with intricately carved arches.
Take care.,

Alex,
I’ve been a reader of M.K. ULTRA for many years. I’ve noticed you’ve turned your back on metal and that is cool and all, but there are a lot of us here who still like it. Despite all of your jokes and hair band references it is till good music that will live forever in our memories of a younger freer time of our lives.
We have a real problem here. Recently at the venue I work at here in Pittsburgh I handed out a copy of the last issue and it got me in a world of shit. Apparently your article about Tommy Lee is a big problem. The management are very good friends with Tommy Lee and your article slamming Motley Crue is a really big problem for me. They contacted Tommy Lee and are sending his attorney a copy of the magazine and everyone was pissed. They really think I gave them this magazine as a nasty malicious act. You need to do an interview with Tommy in response to the one you wrote with the “blatant misinformation” – an article to perhaps “clear the record”.
Really, Alex, this is so bad I don’t think you realize. You would have to do sort of a “pro Crue” or at least write an article that basically states that the info previously reported was incorrect and now you have the facts and wish to set the record straight.
I explained to them that you are not a “dick” and that in fact you are a very down to earth reasonable person, who was probably just going on the information or gossip you had on hand. I’m not sure where you receive your information from but they want a source!
Any article in your magazine with Tommy Lee in it can be nothing but GOOD for you even if it has to be positive about Tommy. Maybe he is a nice guy, you just g=have to look at it from the point that there are always two sides to every story and you’ve only printed one. By the way they have sent Tommy Lee a copy of the magazine ad from what I understand it has really upset him and IF Tommy does speak to you it it will only be through his attorney becasue he has been getting so much shitty press. SO think about it fast. I think you know the possibilities.

Dear Alex Zander,
I think Motley Crue sucks and should be destroyed. Good article. In fact if the Motley clan tried to slap a lawsuit on you that just goes to show how weak and pettey they are. I know he’s difficult interview, but I’d love to see what Glenn Danzig has to say. I also wanted to send kudos to the models, es[cially the female in the last tw issues. I love the Gardens of Stone section and I’ve read the entire magazine multiple times.
I empathize with your imposed exile to Chicago. This state is not conducive to individual personal expression. I feel squeezed in the fist of quasi – moral hypocrisy almost daily.
Keep it dark,

Alex Zander,
My thoughts about Hollywood heavy metal group Motley Crue…sure they’ve survived drugs, alcohol, divorces, lawyers, jail time, scandals in every form, the the only ones who believe that Motley Crueare still a howling success in the music world are Motley Crue.Their heavy metal coliseum gigs aren;t drawing people any closer to them than their as you would call them”bad boy temper tantrums” are. Adding insult to injury, every record store still has Motley Crue cassettes and CD’s on shelves. Unsold. Collecting dust. Hell, I haven;t even seen anyone wearing a Dr. Feelgood shirt since Bush ‘a fascist ass Gulf War..Every heavy metal fan today has 5 Pantera, Korn or Slayer stickers plastered to their window and not one Motley Crue in plain view. And when was the last time that anyone so much as bragged about how great a Motley Crue album was….any takers? Hard rock superstars? Not anymore. KISS washed up old men? They’re selling more concert tickets and comic books than Tommy Lee and his merry band of style stealing closet racists.
I can’t believe I liked them as a teenager. This old black mans introduction to heavy metal was made through the Crue’s first two albums. When the Theater of Pain album was unleashed onto Amerikkkas longhaired headbanging masses teh Crue assumed a poppier sound with an even more effeminate look. Needless to say I was not amused. Color me 17 and disheartened. Now I hear Nikki Sixx went straight mailman on a black security guard on a 1997 NC Crue show. Hurlingmad obscenities at some brother simply doing his night’s work, words of rage, including an abomination to my own ears. NIGGER! Alex, upon reading that far into your article, that shit hurt me. I can see why a security service wanted to press charges against Motley Crue.
Tommy, Vince, Mick and Nikki: I speak for all heavy metal music fans and for myself when I say: Give it up. You look pathetic.. Break up your band now. Because no one cares about your musical career except you. You’d be doing us all a big favor. The 1990’s for Motley Crue, if anything, was a decade of delusion.

Thank you for getting MK all the way to Los Angeles. Your dedication and fascinationwith the Thrill Kill Kult and Miss Sinderella Pussie is noted second only to Fringe Fuck Zine. M.K. ULTRA,
I usually love the magazine, but I got a little pissy with this issue – I am a safe sex educator, of course promoting condom use. I freaked some when I saw there was a condom stapled to the inside of the front cover.I hate to say it but there are a lot of people who wouldn’t get the point and would actually try to use a condom with two staple holes in it. (ohh free condom)
Hell, if you’re going to put a condom in the issue why not put one in a person can use? Just a piece of scotch type tape would get the same message across without being idiot bait. As a safe sex educator I’ve gotten some real bonehead questions from people who really do want to be safe without losing the fun, therefore I know what I speak. Yes, there may be fools out there, but they still deserve to have safe sex…
Please be more careful in the future.

Dear Alex,
I just received your Safe Sex issue. By the way- thanks for the free condom. I could not agree with you more regarding nasty frat brats. Those tb’s are so damn obnoxious! But they are not the reason I felt compelled to write this letter. The reason is The Cult article.
Iwas at the HOuse of Blues show and I was flipped out when Billy Duffy even mentioned that there was security at the show. My friends and I got there early so we could have a good place to stand on the main floor. When The Cult came out, out of nowhere these fat, sweaty, and drunk frat brats came trampling everyone in their path. They jumped up and down doing what they call dancing, and tried to sing along with Ian. Needless to say, it was gross. They made the situation unpleasant, all they cared about was that they had a good time and a good view. They high fived each other when they liked a song, and they were pushing, shoving and trampling. I wished security could do something about it. My friend who is five foot tall could not take it any longer. She shoved one of them back with all of her might. I kicked him in the leg with my platform boot. I do not like violence but they deserved it.
The only redeeming factor was that tThe Cult was awesome!

I am into dark goth metal and have a band that has no support in our area for the mere reason that we live in a shitty town and where any youth there are into hip-hop, rap idiots. That’s why I think your magazine is a great step in music, its about time a publication gives attention to underground, dark, black and goth metal bands!
Thanks a lot. Keep up the awesome work and expose the dark side of music to this fascist country.

I love the recent issue!! I’ve read every word front to back. Every article has been written very well and is so interesting. I especially loved the article about cults in America. I would like a copy of the wine enema video! How much should I send you for that?
Also, I would like to subscribe to the magazine to make sure I don’t miss an issue. I’d also like to sign my brother up. How much should we send you per subscription?

Alex,
Thanks a lot for the positive comments on The Blood and the Body CD. Too many people don’t get what I was going for. The record sounds the way it does because of the limitations I was working under. If there is no drums and no bass it’s because I chose not to include them. You can’t possibly compare the CD to DANZIG records that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. But some chose to, what a joke!
Anyway, I’m glad you dug the vibe, and thanks for printing the interview without changing anything.
Wait till you hear my new thing, it’s very different from the last two. Who knows what will happen. All I know is that it will be koll.
Thanks again,
EERIE Von
Dear M.K. ULTRA,
We read some more of your interviews. The MY RUIN Rocks! Very informative and gets right to the core. You ask all the right questions unlike other mags that inform the reader the brand of lipstick or toilet paper the subject uses. It was interesting to find out all of the reasons for the constant band name changes. Their new album Prayer Under Pressure kicks ass! I contacted The Missing and told them about your interest in doing something with them. They will probably send you a CD and some press stuff as you requested.Let me know how that works out.
Also I am amazed that you know about Lacrimosa. Most people in the US do not even know of their existence. They fucking rock and its about time that they bring their asse sover to the US and get exposed. You mentioned that you are interested in doing an interview with Lacrimosa. If you ever get a chance to bring them to Chicago, let me know. I am a professional video/effects artist.I have done music videos for bands like BCB in the past. My greatest dream is to meet these guys and maybe even make a video for them. I have one of their live VHS tapes from Europe and I must admit the video quality is not all that great. Both Ann and Tilo Wolf have dramatic surreal persona that would blow anyone away in a good professional video. I mean, their shows are so out of this world and theatrical. I would be more than grateful if you let me join you and meet them. I know it’s not easy getting a hold of the except through Germany Hall of Sermons, but maybe I can help out.
Anyways good hearing from you and keep in touch. ROCK ON! Great fucking work.
yours, Dommedusa, Anton, Will NYC
