Shape Navigator is the electronic alter ego of composer, musician and sound artist Peter Coyte, who initially announced himself with a series of ambient meets prog house singles on Guerilla Records in the mid-‘90s, subsequently collaborating with Coldcut, Seal, David McAlmont, Heartless Crew and poet/author Salena Godden.
The years since have seen Coyte establish a first-rate reputation as an electronic and experimental music artist, including significant contributions to sound art and installation projects, plus ongoing collaborations with filmmakers, theatre directors, choreographers and more. His work blends sonic experimentation with emotional depth, creating immersive experiences that engage and intrigue audiences.
Now, three decades after releasing his first single as Shape Navigator, Coyte has finally released his debut album. Entitled ‘Journal’, it is a deeply personal sonic diary, capturing two years of spontaneous creation and exploration on synthesisers. Each track originates from a live improvisation built from unrehearsed, unedited performances where instinct shaped its structure and emotion guided the sound.
“Sounds like a Craven Faults record might if, rather than being produced in an old mill in Yorkshire, it was instead made on the Maunsell World War Two sea forts in the Thames estuary”
ELECTRONIC SOUND
“A nuanced collection that sparks turbulence one moment and tranquillity the next. What a fantastic voyage”
PROG
“Filmic and expansive, yet intimate and personal, every sound is lovingly created and captured, then blended together into a seamless instrumental electronic album”

Created during a period marked by difficult personal life events, ‘Journal’ reflects the turbulence, vulnerability and quiet resilience that emerged along the way. Moments of heaviness seep into the droning harmonics while uncertainty pulses through shifting sequences, but flashes of clarity surface in resonant chords that cut through the haze. The nine performances included on the album became a refuge for Coyte and a way to translate complicated feelings into sound.
A video for ‘Record’ has been made available to accompany the release of the album. It can be seen HERE. Shot by the Barcelona-based video artist Emma Plunkett, it will also be included as part of the ‘Fury’ exhibition at the Centre Cívic El Coll – La Bruguera in that city from 5th March.
A radio edit of the album track ‘Sternenabfall’ (German for ‘Star Litter’) was issued as a single in late January. Electronic Sound magazine stated that it “resembles Neu! riding a North Sea gale”, while its title frames the music as a reflection on beauty and aftermath: a cosmic soundscape that mirrors humanity’s habit of leaving debris in even the most vast and sacred spaces, blending deep-time drone history with an ecological warning.
Coyte is a co-founder of the Whitstable, Kent-based Coastal Electronauts monthly music sessions and record label that has released ‘Journal’. Through this platform, he continues to explore and push the boundaries of experimental sound while sharing his passion for music with a broad and ever-growing audience.
