Alex Cortes of Noir L.A. Unleashes Progressive Instrumental Single “Schizophrenic Daydream”

Alex Cortes, the singular force behind Noir L.A., returns with a new video release, “Schizophrenic Daydream”—a bold, shape-shifting track that defies classification while embracing a progressive metal core. A new video release for a song that is off the first album, Twilight Aftermath, arrives as the first taste of what’s to come from Noir L.A.’s highly anticipated third album, currently in production.

Blending elements of metal, progressive rock, and cinematic soundscapes, “Schizophrenic Daydream” lives up to its title: a controlled explosion of musical chaos that mirrors the unpredictable nature of thought and emotion. Cortes, who performs every instrument himself, calls the song “a rush of energy designed to hit like an endorphin spike. I hope it brings people the kind of excitement and release they didn’t know they needed.”

A history buff and deep thinker fascinated by human psychology, Cortes pours philosophical nuance into his songwriting, even when there are no lyrics. “Schizophrenic Daydream” explores themes of contrast, duality, and perception through rhythm, tempo, and sonic texture rather than words. As with much of his work, it’s as cerebral as it is visceral.

The Next Chapter of Noir L.A.

Noir L.A. is more than a band—it’s a self-contained creative universe. From songwriting to mixing, drum programming to album artwork, Alex Cortes does it all. Known for this uncompromising artistic approach, fans often compare him to Trent Reznor or Lemmy—visionaries who don’t just perform music, they embody it.

The upcoming third Noir L.A. album is shaping up to be Cortes’ most expansive work to date: a genre-spanning record rooted in heavy metal but unbound by tradition. From fierce ballads to progressive instrumentals like “Schizophrenic Daydream,” the album continues Noir L.A.’s mission to challenge assumptions about what heavy music can be.

With live guitarist Dimitri Mandylor and drummer Shane Wood (Cortes’ nephew) joining him on stage, Noir L.A. transforms from a one-man studio machine into a commanding three-piece live act—known for raw, unpredictable performances that bring Cortes’ intricate recordings to life.

Noir L.A. is the brainchild of Alex Cortes, a Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer, and visual artist. Performing every note and crafting every element himself, Cortes fuses heavy metal, hard rock, progressive, acoustic, and alternative sounds into what he calls “diversity metal.” His influences range from The Beatles, Black Sabbath, and Slayer to Jim Croce, Paco de Lucía, and vintage horror VHS tapes.

A self-taught philosopher at heart, Cortes writes with emotional depth, layered symbolism, and a dark, ironic tone. The result is a catalog of music that is musically rich, emotionally raw, and wholly original.
