SUN DONT SHINE continues their uncompromising march into the darker corners of hard rock with the release of “What You Are.” This fifth single, written by Kenny Hickey, Kirk Windstein, and Todd Strange, is doom-laced hard rock at its finest. Out now on all streaming platforms alongside a brand-new lyric video.
From its first crushing riff to its final, lingering fade, “What You Are” captures the essence of SUN DONT SHINE — a sound that feels familiar yet utterly its own. Todd Strange’s main riff was the seed that grew into one of the band’s most complete and powerful tracks, setting a tone that’s as suffocating as it is strangely alive. “This is our modern interpretation of the music we grew up on,” Strange explains.
“‘What You Are’ hits with that classic weight — dark, slow, and unrelenting — but there’s something fresh in the way it breathes. Todd brought in the main riff, and it set the tone for what became one of the band’s most fully realized songs,” explains Andrew Spaulding of Corpse Paint Records. “This one really captures the spirit of SUN DONT SHINE: familiar shadows, but a new kind of darkness.”
The single arrives as anticipation builds for the band’s full-length album, due later this year.
