MOVIE REVIEW: Mark of the Devil and Witchfinder General

review by Paul Baio for MK ULTRA Magazine

Tonight’s movie recommendations, with similar names or themes, are 1970’s Mark of the Devil and 1968’s Witchfinder General. Both films explore the occupation of Witchfinder in the 17th century.

Mark of the Devil follows the story of a Witchfinder apprentice who adheres to the principles of justice and fairness when accusing individuals of witchcraft, but becomes disenchanted when he discovers the injustices perpetrated by the Witchfinder he is assigned to. The film contains explicit violence, including graphic medieval torture scenes. Notably, gimmicky barf bags were provided to moviegoers as a promotional item. Featuring Herbert Lom and Udo Kier.
Witchfinder General features Vincent Price as Mathew Hopkins, a lawyer who falsely claims to be a Witchfinder appointed by parliament. He and his assistant travel from village to village, charging local magistrates for their services. They soon incur the wrath of a soldier after they prey on his fiancée and her family. Although not frightening, it’s a really good movie with the best performance of Price’s career.
