The Song Of Trees is the debut album from dark electronic folk band, Hem Netjer. It was written mostly remotely during the height of the lockdowns.
The album is a musical journey through the five elements; Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Void. With three singles already released, The Song Of Trees entices the listener to look within themselves, in hopes to find something from each stage of the elemental journey that can be used within their daily lives.
The journey starts off with Void, the nothingness, the empty state of being where one can relax and just be in an open state. Next we move to Salt And Tears, where the water consumes you, allowing the waves to wash away that which doesn’t serve you.
The next stage is Eldur, where the fire will ignite the passion behind that which does serve you and rekindle a reminder of what you value within yourself. Freedom represents the air we breathe. This air reminds you to go with the flow and to let the journey take you to where it is needed. Next, with Connect we go deep into the earth to ground and root yourself, to keep you stable in a fluctuating world.
On the second last stage, we see all the elements coming together in “Elemental Cry”, to help release your inner warrior within. Lastly, our final stage, Otherworld, reminds us to work alongside those that are no longer around or those that are not always known, to find the connection with ourselves.
The Song of Trees will be released on February 28 on all major digital platforms including Bandcamp.
Hem Netjer creates dark electronic folk music based out of Vancouver, BC, Canada. Inspired by the middle Egyptian word for god’s servant (priest), we combine ancient stories, traditional instruments and modern technology. Haunting female vocals blended with deep throat singing and catchy synth lines create sounds that – as a reviewer noted – “moves the body and the soul”.
Our single “Otherworld” released on October 31st 2020 including an official music video. The EP Kemet, which explores ancient Egyptian mythologies with modern soundscapes, was released shortly thereafter. Our new full length album The Song Of Trees is set to be released in February, 2023.
Raven Rissy is the lead vocalist, songwriter and visual designer. Her musical talents also include, classically trained piano, clarinet, fiddle, harp, tagelharpa, rotta lyre and frame drum and she has studied under artists such as Lindy-Fae Hella from Wardruna. Her Egyptology degree greatly influenced the EP Kemet, including the song Anubis; sung in ancient Middle Egyptian.
David Deckard is interested in combining traditional sounds and electronic music and specializes in digital sound design. Using his skills as a computer programmer he experiments with different technologies and input devices with the goal to bring digital melodies to the stage in a way that feels as natural as a traditional instrument would.
Jesse Ellytt experimented with creating electronic music until discovering throat singing. Using the traditional Tuvan style as a base, his deep reverberations mixed with digital bass lines shapes into a unique combination of sounds and rhythms. His style of singing creates an experience that will be different each time a song is performed.
