Formed in 2002, Rotersand is the German dark electro-pop duo of Rascal Nikov (vocals, electronics) and Krischan Jan-Eric Wesenberg (electronics). Soon to celebrate their 25th anniversary, they are marking the occasion with a series of single releases, the first of which is out today (16th October).
Leading off with a remastered original 2001 demo version of their debut single, ‘Merging Oceans’, it is accompanied by three remixes of ‘Train’, a fan favourite included on their acclaimed 2025 album, ‘Don’t Become The Thing You Hated’.
Whereas the dreamlike music and rhythms of the former had been inspired by a newspaper article about a sailor who obsessed about navigating all the world’s seas on an ancient wooden ship, the hypnotic industrialised beats of the latter symbolise a childhood trauma (the early death of his mother) that Nikov has only recently overcome. It had manifested itself in a recurring nightmare about a fast-moving train from which he could never disembark, even though he desperately wanted to.
Together, these songs present a powerful snapshot of a band that has traversed 21st century Germany’s electronic music landscape like few others. Blending Electro, Industrial, Techno and EDM with driving club energy and atmospheric textures, Rotersand have consistently crossed genre boundaries while remaining unmistakably themselves. This anniversary release connects and cements their legacy with contemporary club sounds, appealing to fans of numerous sub-genres.
