Los Angeles, California: Hard on the heels of Cleopatra Records’ much-applauded tribute to Ritchie Blackmore’s “other” band, Ride The Rainbow, November 13 will see the release of Purple Storm – A Tribute To Deep Purple – and, once again, the stars of hard rock, metal and more pour out to bring their own unique twist too some of the most beloved anthems in the hard rock pantheon.
A few cuts from this hard-hitting album have already slipped out, but this is the one that a lot of fans have been waiting for, as the mighty Angel follow up their much-acclaimed contribution to Ride The Rainbow with a dynamite assault upon one of the cornerstones of Deep Purple’s repertoire, “Woman From Tokyo.”
The performance has already made headlines – released as a limited edition 12-inch single earlier this summer, the entire pressing sold out in barely 12 hours! Now the Woman is back aboard Misterdeeds11/Jay Rice‘s eye catching video, blending studio footage of Angel recording the song with footage from one of the band’s own visits to Japan – a country that holds them in as high regard as their rabid Stateside following.
“Deep Purple was one of my favorite bands back in the day,” says Angel veteran Punky Meadows. “Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore…. what can I say? That goes without saying! When Cleopatra asked Angel to contribute to the Deep Purple tribute album, we chose to do a classic..Give it a kick in the ass… and Angelize it!
“‘My Woman From Tokyo’!! Dig It!!”
Bandmate Frank Dimino continues, “Recording the Deep Purple song brought back memories of when we rehearsed next door to each other in the Gower Studios lot. Great band, great song, great times!!!!”
Of course, there’s a multitude of further Purple classics featured on Purple Storm – 11 of them to be precise, including “Highway Star,” “Child In Time,” “Space Trucking’,” “Smoke On The Water,” “Black Night”… each of them paramount among the songs that truly confirmed Purple’s superstardom, both at the outset of their career (“Hush,” their debut US hit single) and into later years too (the title track from 1984’s Perfect Strangers).
The guests, meanwhile, represent several generations of rock glitterati – L.A. Guns, Chris Adler, Chris Poland and David Ellefson (Megadeth), Alan Davey (Hawkwind, Hawkestrel), Ronnie Romero and Bob Daisley (Rainbow), Jonathan Cain (Journey), Pat Travers, Arthur Brown, Carmine Appice (Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, Rod Stewart), Thor, Rick Wakeman (Yes, David Bowie), Mick Box (Uriah Heep) and more!
