Nadia Kodes’ Acoustic Rust Reimagines Type O Negative Through a Stark, Cinematic Piano Lens

The Saint Petersburg–born singer-songwriter and pianist brings renewed global attention to her viral, critically embraced interpretations—earning recognition from the Type O Negative camp and a rapidly growing international audience

Los Angeles, CA— Classically trained singer-songwriter and pianist Nadia Kodes is reigniting global attention around her haunting, minimalist project Acoustic Rust—an eight-track piano-driven reimagining of the iconic catalog of gothic metal pioneers Type O Negative. Originally released in 2023, the album is experiencing a powerful resurgence as new listeners discover Kodes’ emotionally raw interpretations, while longtime fans of the band continue to champion her work across platforms.

Kodes’ journey with Acoustic Rust began in 2017 with a deeply personal moment of artistic transformation. During a difficult period in her life, she discovered Type O Negative’s “Anesthesia”—a track whose stark vulnerability would become the catalyst for everything that followed.

“I discovered the band during a very heavy time in my life,” says Kodes. “When I heard ‘Anesthesia,’ it didn’t feel like a song—it felt like someone telling the truth without filters. I sat at the piano immediately. It wasn’t planned. It just happened.”

She uploaded her piano-and-vocal rendition to YouTube—an intimate, stripped-back performance that would go on to resonate widely with fans of the band, amassing significant traction and sparking a creative movement. To date, Kodes’ Type O Negative covers have garnered over 534,000 combined views, with fans praising the emotional clarity and reverence she brings to material often defined by its sonic weight.

What emerged from that moment was Acoustic Rust: a body of work that distills the essence of Type O Negative into something equally heavy—but sonically bare. Each track trades distortion for space, replacing walls of guitars with the stark intimacy of piano and voice.

“Type O Negative’s music is massive, but at its core, it’s incredibly vulnerable,” Kodes explains. “I wanted to explore that vulnerability in its purest form. When you remove everything else, what remains is the truth of the song.”

The project has not only resonated with fans but has also reached the inner circle of the Type O Negative legacy. Acoustic Rust has been acknowledged by the band’s official social platforms and has received private praise from members of the band’s extended family, as well as drummer Johnny Kelly.

“I’ve been aware of Nadia and became a fan of her work for some time now.  I really enjoy how she put a unique twist on our songs and made them her own.  She has a fantastic voice and I’m looking forward to hearing what she does next!” – Johnny Kelly

Mixed and mastered by Igor Smirnov, Acoustic Rust captures a sonic clarity that allows Kodes’ classical foundation and vocal nuance to take center stage. The project stands as both tribute and transformation—an interpretation that expands the emotional vocabulary of the original works.

Beyond Acoustic Rust, Nadia Kodes is an artist with a deep and evolving creative identity. A lifelong musician who began singing at the age of six, she later appeared on Russian MTV and has continued to develop a signature sound that bridges classical discipline with contemporary alternative influences. Often described by fans as a “princess of darkness,” Kodes draws inspiration from both The Beatles and Type O Negative—what she playfully refers to as “The Fab Four and The Drab Four.”

Her original material further reflects this duality. Her latest single, “Thank You,” — which features Francesco DiCosmo, the bassist who recorded on Evanescence’s Fallen — subtly nods to her influences while carving out a distinct voice, and she is currently working on her forthcoming album Duality, which promises to expand on the emotional and sonic themes introduced in Acoustic Rust.

“I don’t separate light from dark in my music,” says Kodes. “They exist together. Acoustic Rust was about honoring something that saved me—but my original work is about understanding who I am beyond that.”

As Acoustic Rust continues to gain momentum across streaming platforms, Nadia Kodes stands at a pivotal moment—bridging tribute and authorship, past influence and future evolution.
