Transhumanism is defined as ‘the belief or theory that the human race can evolve beyond its current physical and mental limitations, especially by means of science and technology.’ Advanced Bionics (pixelgrinder Theme) by pixelgrinder is proof that this notion extends to evolution through music as well. Motivated to create this album after regaining his lost hearing via cochlear implant, pixelgrinder gives the listener a sense of what it’s like to experience bursts of unexpected, exhilarating noise. He pushes the listener into expansion with jolts of industrial, dance, and synth-wave beats. Framing his hearing aid as an example of futuristic body modification, this album mixes the philanthropic message of disability acceptance with aggressive cyber-punk EDM. Conceptually, it is a brave and innovative release. Pixelgrinder pulls it off effortlessly while inventing the image of a new ‘Bionic man,’ shaped through music. – Fiona Rae
