“I am large, I contain multitudes” poet Walt Whitman once said. Matthew Lidwin, better known as the primary creative force behind goth metal band 616, embraces his own multitudes on his most recent release, an EP of songs entitled Gods & Monsters. As the title itself suggests, Lidwin explores the duality of his own personality and artistic vision over the course of 4 songs, the light, the dark, the heavy, the sublime.
The final song, “Evil,” seems to capture the spirit of the project best. Leaning heavy into the acoustic guitar motif utilized in other tracks, Lidwin here sounds his most passionate and possessed, allowing his vocals to soar between falsetto and full voice with ease. It’s a bravura performance that will have you coming back for more, which is good because there is a lot more to be gleaned from this short EP.
