Metropolis Records just announced The Ghosts I Have Called by yelworC

review by Detroit Jason Kenski

As a rocker/metalhead, who got into electronic music/dark electro late in the game, I gave the recently released album by the band yelworC a couple listens. Didn’t know anything about the band prior to this(which could be a blessing or a curse). Mostly instrumental, with some vocals and samples thrown in on occasion, it stood out from some of the music I’ve heard over the last 20 years. A collection of music they recorded from 2013 onwards, it was very dark, haunting, gothic and hypnotic, the grooves in the bassline and the atmospheric samples drew me in from the start. Upon the 1st listen, I got the impression that they were German(they are) and you can hear the Skinny Puppy influence in their music, but with their own twist on it(like I said, I’m not an expert on the electronic music scene).

Of the 15 tracks on the album, a few stood out to me and perked my ears. The 2nd track “Babylon’s Code”, which sounds like it should be on a suspenseful horror movie soundtrack, track #3 “Can’t You See…?”, which has a surf rock feel to it, Tracks #5 and #6, “Erased Name-Blind Life” and “Crucified With Revolution” which appealed to the rock fan in me, track #7 “The Way The World Ends”, where the bassline drew me in, track #8 “The Inner Dialogue”, where I got caught up in its rhythm, track #11 “Mutated Tongues” and track #13 “Get & Want”.

I cannot say that this is their best work, because I haven’t heard anything other than this, but for a 1st time listener to their music, I enjoyed it and just might dig deeper into their earlier stuff.
