Matt Zane Asserts Ownership of Wayne Static Footage Used in New Static?X Videos
Los Angeles — Matt Zane, director of the forthcoming unauthorized documentary about Wayne Static and Tera Wray, today announced that every image of Wayne Static appearing in Static?X’s recently released music videos was sourced from Zane’s private archives.
According to Zane, footage he shot while working with Wayne Static was used in the videos for “Bring You Down,” “Dead Souls,” “Terrible Lie,” “All These Years” and “Stay Alive.”
“Static?X had to come to me in order to make those videos. I felt Wayne should be singing his own songs instead of Xero lip syncing so I allowed it to be used in good faith,” said Zane.
Zane says he permitted the band to use the footage based on an informal agreement that he would later produce a documentary focusing on Wayne and Tera. He maintains he never executed a formal release granting ownership or broad usage rights.
“I never signed a release for the footage so technically they can’t use it since they don’t own it,” Zane said.
Despite reported pushback from the band and the estates of Wayne Static and Tera Wray, Zane confirms he is continuing work on the unauthorized documentary.
