After several weeks of anticipation and the release of the album’s first single, the gripping “Last Exit,” former PiL bassist and prominent musical innovator Jah Wobble is ready to share the complete slate of songs that make up his brand new solo album, A Brief History Of Now. Wobble, whom many have seen recently on numerous press outlets being interviewed about his collaboration and friendship with the recently departed Sinéad O’Connor, is not one to relish in past accomplishments, of which he has many, or content to rest on his laurels as an elder statesman for the modern post-punk sound. Instead, A Brief History Of Now shows how Wobble’s intensely inventive spirit uses the materials of his past to create something wholly new, wholly vital and eminently NOW.
The album’s first single, “Last Exit,” for instance, used Klein’s post-punkish guitar lines and Wobble’s frenetic, driving bass to craft an ode to post-modern society that wouldn’t feel out of place on a PiL record. However, for his newest single, Wobble revisits his longstanding and well-cultivated interest in dub rhythms and atmospheres. With the signature use of massive reverb and echo mixed with a prominent Jamaican rhythm bassline, “I Am, I Am, I Am” is less standard rock song than a spiritual mantra for the everyday citizen “floating” through a Tesco, a British grocery mega-chain similar to a Wal-Mart here in the States. The track is as heady as it is addictive, and the superbly psychedelic video, directed by Vicento Cordero of Industrialism Films, guarantees that a mind-altering experience awaits all who dare to enter Wobble World.
