Pearl is the standalone prequel to Ti West’s X, which is the origin of the trilogies main antagonist. Where X plays like a gritty ’70s grindhouse slasher, Pearl is more of a retro stylistic ’40s Psycho. Although there’s really nothing new here, I did like it. However, if not for the X trilogy, I’m not sure how invested I would have been. With that, I’m eager to see the final installment, MaXXXine which takes place in the ’80s.
