While the year 2024 has been largely disappointing for studio horror films, a handful of smaller titles have stood out with modest grosses that more than make up for their shoestring budgets. This weekend, director\u00a0Ti West<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0completed his trilogy of slasher horror movies with\u00a0MaXXXine<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, which\u00a0debuted inside the top five domestically<\/strong>\u00a0with a franchise-best opening weekend haul. West\u2019s trilogy spans over six decades, and stars the same actor \u2014\u00a0Mia Goth<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2014 across all three movies, which pay homage to different sub-genres of horror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MaXXXine<\/em>, a tribute to Brian De Palma<\/strong>\u2019s lurid thrillers<\/a>, opened to $6.7 million domestically this weekend<\/a>, finishing fourth at the box office. The movie added another $1.1 million from overseas markets, for an early global total of $7.8 million<\/strong>. These films have historically skewed stateside, and will have turned a nice profit for A24 when the dust settles; each installment reportedly cost less than $10 million to produce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trilogy began in 2022<\/strong>\u00a0with\u00a0X<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, West\u2019s take on\u00a0Texas Chainsaw Massacre<\/em><\/strong><\/a>-style horror, which grossed over $11 million domestically and more than $3 million from overseas markets, for a combined global haul of $15 million. He followed it up with\u00a0Pearl<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, a Sirk-ian prequel set in the early 20th century, which grossed over $9 million domestically but under $1 million in overseas markets, for a combined global gross of $10 million.\u00a0MaXXXine<\/em>\u00a0is set in the 1980s, and follows the central character from the first film as she tries to make it in\u00a0a Hollywood grappling with the Night Stalker murders<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to their box office success,\u00a0each installment has received positive reviews<\/strong>, which is very rare for the horror genre.\u00a0X<\/em>\u00a0remains the top-rated film of the trilogy, with a \u201cfresh\u201d 94% approval rating on the aggregator website\u00a0Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>;\u00a0Pearl<\/em>\u00a0holds a 92% score.\u00a0MaXXXine<\/em>\u00a0currently has a 75% RT rating, with Collider\u2019s\u00a0Emma Kiely<\/strong>\u00a0describing it as \u201ca loud, bombastic, sexy, bloody, and unapologetic farewell to one of the best horror trilogies of all time,\u201d\u00a0in her review<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prior to\u00a0MaXXXine<\/em>\u2019s release, the marketplace had seen a host of big-ticket horror misfires from major studios, while smaller-budget films such as\u00a0Late Night with the Devil<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Immaculate<\/a><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0performed reasonably well. In a career spanning two decades, West has established himself as one of the most dependably inventive low-budget horror filmmakers around, with early hits such as\u00a0The House of the Devil<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0The Innkeepers<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. It\u2019s a testament to his indie spirit that even his franchise films are wholly original. Also starring\u00a0Elizabeth Debicki<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0Moses Sumney<\/strong>,\u00a0Michelle Monaghan<\/strong>,\u00a0Bobby Cannavale<\/strong>,\u00a0Halsey<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0Lily Collins<\/strong>,\u00a0Giancarlo Esposito<\/strong>, and\u00a0Kevin Bacon<\/strong>,\u00a0MaXXXine<\/em>\u00a0is playing in theaters.
