On 19 August 2023, US goth rock icons The Wake<\/a> return to play Ciudad de M\u00e9xico (CDMX), alias Mexico City, for the first time in more-than 25 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In less-than two months, on 19 August 2023, US goth rock icons The Wake<\/a> return to play Mexico\u2019s capital Ciudad de M\u00e9xico (CDMX), alias Mexico City, for the first time in more-than 25 years. The announcement comes on the back of highly successful landmark shows for the band in New Jersey and Madrid, between October and November 2022: marking The Wake<\/a>\u2019s first live outings since 1999.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In October 2022, ahead of the US and Spanish shows, The Wake<\/a> frontman and co-founder Troy Payne<\/strong> also spoke to Post-punk.com<\/a> about the band\u2019s love for their Mexican audience:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur Mexican fans are really something to behold. They don\u2019t get cheated \u2013 they come to rock out and they do just that. Looking forward to hopefully getting back there in 2023.<\/em>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those hopes have since been confirmed. Troy recently told Mexico\u2019s Sound and Vision M\u00fasica<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes, at long last <\/em>The Wake<\/em><\/a> is returning to CDMX to play what we hope will be another amazing show in front of some of the best fans the goth music scene has to offer<\/strong>.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Asked why returning to Mexico was so important for the band, Troy reflected on The Wake<\/a>\u2019s now-legendary sold-out shows in CDMX between 1995 and 1997:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPlaying Mexico was a priority for one reason \u2013 history (\u2026) The shows we played in Mexico were beyond special, for sure, and it was all about the fans. As I\u2019ve said before, Mexican concert goers don\u2019t just attend, they participate. Their passion is on full display before, during, and after the show. If you want to feel like Elvis, or The Beatles \u2013 go play Mexico.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Formed by Troy Payne<\/strong> and guitarist Rich Witherspoon<\/strong> between 1985 and 1986, while both were still at high school together in Columbus, Ohio, The Wake<\/a> is currently playing with their \u201cclassic\u201d 1988-1994 line-up, which also includes long-time drummer Daniel C. <\/strong>(2 Forks), and bassist James Tramel<\/strong> (October Burns Black). While The Wake<\/a> have never truly disbanded, the reunited core members have gone from strength-to-strength since the release of their latest album \u2018Perfumes and Fripperies<\/em><\/a>\u2019 in 2020, and its follow-up remix EP \u2018Mixers & Elixirs<\/em><\/a>\u2019 in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fans can catch The Wake<\/a> live at Sala Urbana<\/strong> (formerly \u2018Punto Urbano\u2019) in CDMX, Mexico, on 19 August 2023, proudly presented by Xibalba MX Producciones<\/a>, with special guests Ataraxia<\/a> (Italy) and TheWaning Moon<\/a> (US\/Costa Rica).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
