CANNES \u2014 Quentin Tarantino confirmed Thursday that his next movie, \u201cThe Movie Critic,\u201d will be based on a little known reviewer for a 1970s porn magazine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tarantino spoke<\/a> to Deadline\u2019s Baz Bamigboye while attending the Cannes Film Festival. It was the first time the cult director described at length the topic of his upcoming, yet-to-be-shot film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is based on a guy who really lived, but was never really famous, and he used to write movie reviews for a porno rag,\u201d Tarantino told Deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tarantino explained that when he was a teen, one of his jobs was restocking vending machines that sold porn magazines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll the other stuff was too skanky to read but then there was this porno rag that had a really interesting movie page,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For \u201cThe Movie Critic,\u201d the fictional porn magazine will be called The Popstar Pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tarantino added that the critic was not known to the general public but \u201che was known if you read \u2018The Popstar Pages\u2019!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real man behind his new movie\u2019s protagonist, he noted, \u201cwrote about mainstream movies and he was the second-string critic. I think he was a very good critic. He was as cynical as hell. His reviews were a cross between early Howard Stern and what Travis Bickle might be if he were a film critic. Think about Travis\u2019s diary entries. But the porno rag critic was very, very funny. He was very rude, you know. He cursed. He used racial slurs. But his shit was really funny. He was as rude as hell.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tarantino added that the reviewer \u201cwrote like he was 55 but he was only in his early to mid-30s. He died in his late thirties. It wasn\u2019t clear for a while but now I\u2019ve done some more research and I think it was complications due to alcoholism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The film is yet to be cast, with the director now looking for \u201csomebody in the 35 year-old ball park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
