Punk legend\u00a0Cheetah Chrome<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 co-founder of\u00a0DEAD BOYS<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 died Sunday, September 13 at the age of 71.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are incredibly sad to announce the news of the passing of our beloved friend and bandmate Cheetah Chrome<\/strong>,” Chrome<\/strong>‘s DEAD BOYS<\/strong> bandmates wrote on social media. “Cheetah<\/strong> was a true original, an architect of the punk rock movement. A one-man hurricane tearing up the musical landscape with his feral guitar riffs and manic energy. Beyond all that Cheetah<\/strong> was also just a really sweet guy that loved rock-roll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We extend our deepest condolences to Cheetah<\/strong>‘s family, friends and fans around the world. His music lives on and will continue to inspire others for generations to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We ask for privacy during this difficult time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Godspeed Cheetah<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Tony<\/strong>, Chris<\/strong>, Mark<\/strong> and the entire DEAD BOYS<\/strong> family.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cheetah<\/strong>, whose real name was Eugene Richard O’Connor<\/strong>, is survived by his wife, Anna O’Connor<\/strong>, and his 14-year-old son Rogan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chrome<\/strong> helped architect the sound of punk with the seminal rock band ROCKET FROM THE TOMBS<\/strong> (along with David Thomas<\/strong> and Peter Laughner<\/strong>, who would later form Pere Ubu<\/strong>) before launching a new project with ROCKET<\/strong> drummer Johnny Blitz<\/strong> and frontman Stiv Bators<\/strong>. DEAD BOYS<\/strong> became a fixture at new York City’s CBGB and the band’s 1977 debut album, “Young, Loud And Snotty”<\/strong>, was an instant classic, while their hit “Sonic Reducer”<\/strong> became a punk anthem. Despite landing a major label deal with Sire<\/strong>, the group was over by 1979.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2010 Cheetah<\/strong> published his well-received autobiography, “Cheetah Chrome: A Dead Boy’s Tale From The Front Lines Of Punk Rock”<\/strong>, and became the creative director for Nashville-based Plowboy Records<\/strong>. The company released his first-ever solo EP, “Solo”<\/strong>, in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
