Between Heaven and Earth, the haunting and deeply personal new album from Alicia Witt, arrives August 28 via Thirty Tigers. Recorded live in New York City with producer Joe Henry and a band assembled specifically for the project, the album exists in a space suspended between transcendence and intimacy, channeling what Witt describes as \u201ceternal unconditional love\u201d and \u201cthe place suspended between heaven and earth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The album was profoundly shaped by the influence and memory of David Lynch, whose impact on Witt stretches back to her first film role as Alia in Dune at age seven. \u201cI can\u2019t imagine who I would be without David Lynch,\u201d Witt reflects. \u201cHe is weaved throughout the fabric of my life.\u201d Throughout Between Heaven and Earth, Witt explores what she learned from Lynch \u201cregarding love. The eternal nature of it, the idea that only love is real.\u201d She describes his presence as palpable throughout the making of the record: \u201cDavid was with us every day in the studio. All six of us in the band felt his presence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While widely recognized for her acclaimed acting career spanning film, television, and stage, music has remained a constant throughline in Witt\u2019s life. A classically trained pianist who supported herself as a musician when she first moved to Los Angeles, Witt has long integrated music into her creative identity, both through her own songwriting and in many of the roles she has portrayed onscreen. She\u2019s released multiple full-length albums, including Revisionary History (2015), The Conduit (2021), and I Think I\u2019m Spending Christmas With You (2024). Between Heaven and Earth represents the latest chapter in that ongoing musical journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tracked live over four days with vocals and instrumentation recorded simultaneously, the album embraces what Witt calls a \u201cvisceral and eternal\u201d energy, one that \u201ccould never be replicated.\u201d Guided by Henry\u2019s vision and the chemistry of the musicians in the room, the songs were created instinctively and in the moment, with minimal overdubs and an openness to what Witt repeatedly refers to as \u201cthat place\u201d \u2014 the transcendent emotional state she connects to through Transcendental Meditation, prayer, creativity, and Lynch\u2019s work itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The songs on Between Heaven and Earth explore themes of longing, fate, healing, surrender, nostalgia, gratitude, and connection through what Witt describes as a lens of \u201cinsistent optimism.\u201d The title track embraces \u201ca mystical connection with a brand new person,\u201d rooted in \u201cchildlike faith in the possibility\u201d and the belief that \u201cit does no harm to dream.\u201d On \u201cArtifacts,\u201d Witt examines \u201creleasing ancient lessons that no longer serve,\u201d gently excavating old wounds and learning \u201chow to love.\u201d \u201cKindred\u201d channels the feeling of \u201cwalls crumbling\u201d and \u201cbarriers evaporating in a fabric made of light and destiny,\u201d while \u201cBuild Me A Dream\u201d reflects on \u201cconstructing the reality we wish to exist in\u201d and recognizing \u201can eternal soul connection.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elsewhere, songs like \u201cFreeze Frame,\u201d \u201cTest Drive,\u201d and \u201cBlue Moon\u201d meditate on alternate timelines, nostalgia, and the peaceful acceptance of connections that were not meant to remain. \u201cThank You,\u201d featuring John Paul White, transforms heartbreak into gratitude, reflecting on relationships that \u201ccleared the way for new relationships and opportunities to come in.\u201d On \u201cLove Anyway,\u201d Witt sings about unconditional love that remains even when unreturned: \u201cThe love is what\u2019s important. You love and give love without condition or expectation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
