people on the Near West Side early Sunday, injuring five Chicago Police officers and at least one bystander, according to witnesses and preliminary information gathered at the scene. At least 14 people were arrested during the incident, including the driver and two of his passengers, sources said. So far, CPD has not issued any statements about what happened.

Police had been in the area of Washburne and Throop since Saturday night, managing a large teen block party. Justin Peters, head of Chitown Crime Chasers, estimated 500 people were involved.

By around midnight, police supervisors began towing vehicles to clear streets and stop more people from arriving by car. But the crowd continued to grow and become increasingly unruly. CPD brought in teams from districts across the city to carry out the effort, but the sheer size of the crowd, which at times broke into fights and pepper spray battles, made it difficult for some officers to get close to the scene.

Usually if I am not camping or hosting a BBQ here at Casa Diablo over Memorial Day weekend, I spend the balance of the day at Montrose Beach eating Mexican street food such as Elotes made by hand per order and sipping cold cocktails in the sun without a worry other than getting busted for the booze. But that’s never happened for 2 reasons. 1: we don’t get stupid as in obviously intoxicated and 2: we keep it in containers being smart by not having and visibly labeled beverages that can be cited as evidence. The local Chads and Trixies stupidly walk around with a labeled beer out in the open in their hands while playing mainstream frat rock. Once upon a time these types have stayed closer to their north side beaches of Oak Street or Lake Street Beach but as my neighborhood has become more and more gentrified the area has been invaded by such types and Hispanic families are pushed back to the grassier regions.

Lately holidays at the Chicago beaches are no longer safe or fun for anyone not participating in what the media refers to as “teen take overs or trends” and the Mayor in his ultimate wisdom has dubbed “unauthorized gatherings” when what they are, are truly violent and unlawful riots. It has become not only predictable but is now common and normal behavior ever since the George Floyd riots and looting of which the latter is now expected and more common than not. Stores are shutting down around the city because of theft and violence. Even the Walgreens on my corner has been hit daily over and over and over and I’ve witnessed “people” walking out with cases of booze and Cheetos. The hard liquor has been moved to behind the registers which is a deterrent but still gets raided and cigarette sales have ceased due to the ongoing theft. I’ve never been a smoker and have no idea how anyone in this city can afford that habit after the local taxes on tobacco products but its still a shame.

Toiletries at Walgreens no longer allows for options. Forget Brawney, Bounty or even less expensive Scott Brand paper towels or TP such as Charmin, Quilted Northern, or Cottonelle. They only sell Walgreens brand at my location due to theft. The worst part is that our latest progressive Mayor does not support arrests. Another one term Mayor.

As I mentioned 2 weeks ago, even my Dollar Tree location has the candy locked behind locked plastic display shelves.

For years, especially during harder times the beaches were my refuge, my getaway and escape from at times a day to day struggle. It started in 2017 as a response to all the people who have asked for one more issue or an annual of MK. Its not fiscally possible. That world no longer exists. Record label media presence barely exists and the distributors are all bankrupt as of 2005 and the chains that would stock the publication are mostly if not all gone. Record stores. book store chains and many magazine shops no longer exist. So there are no real advertisers or distributors that makes it affordable. The other request for years was for me to pen an autobiography/memoir which I really have no interest in as I did begin that venture in 2011 and lost interest as everything that led up to the birth of “Alex Zander” is actually more tragically depressing than not. My actual eventual entry into the professional music industry world wasn’t until late 1988 when I relocated to Columbus OH and I didn’t enter into a career as a journalist till 1990 even though I’ve always been a writer and a DJ for over a decade prior as either a student or as a hobby.

So I made an executive decision 10 years ago the answer was to compile a collection of the moist significant work from those years in MK ULTRA and commercial rock radio. Much content has been previously seen or heard and many unpublished images and stories due to “community standards” or out of respect for the artists privacy are also included. Oh the behind the scenes are juicy juicy juicy. Its going to be very behind the scenes as well as the ultimate “scrapbook” for those they are responsible for me keeping it alive for a decade and into the ever evolving digital age.

Furthermore, It’s being orchestrated as an oral biography (or oral history) which will tell the story of the project through a mosaic of interviews, quotes, and recollections from those who were part of the journey rather than my personal perspective.

The original cover concept 2017 and former title WINE WOMEN and SONG The M.K. It’s the only good fight there is.” — Charles Bukowski (Factotum)

Prelude

It was the summer of 2000 that I realized this thing was getting too big. The magazine I created, the name I had given myself and become, and my life as I knew it was once and for all over. In 1994 I set out to kill the person that I was born, and after 30 years of broken dreams, gallant attempts and being stifled by a socially retarded society in the region where I was raised and those experiences now long behind me, I had willingly succeeded in committing symbolic suicide.

August 31, 2000 started out just like any other day. I drove my laundry over to a laundromat around 9 AM, and more than likely due to anticipation of my good friend and fellow road warrior Mike Blackley driving up to Chicago from Indianapolis for a concert later that evening, I locked my keys inside the car. So as my clothes were being washed I naturally panicked, “how the hell am I going to get into my car?” Mike was set to arrive around 1 PM and Slash’s van (I was working the Chicago Street team for Slash’s Snakepit release and tour) was going to pick us up around 3 PM. And around 3 PM in the afternoon is NOT a good idea when driving from the inner city out to Tinley Park where the venue was, which I had attempted to explain that in advance Eddie who was the mastermind of the Slash Tour at the time. So, in my panic and desperation I decided to go in search of a wire garment hanger to jimmy the door lock of my car.

A few hours later we’re in this van that has Slash’s face displayed over the thing, one of those types of vans where the image can cover the back and side windows with the passengers being able to still see outside, much like many city buses. Inside were the crew, a bottle of Jack Daniels and Mike and I had a cooler full of Coors Light. We were stuck in traffic for hours, and forced to urinate outside at the side of the road in broad daylight, when we needed to. People were peering at 5 guys with long black hair and leather pants and weird hats relieving themselves roadside. As I wondered what went through their minds as we all erupted in laughter as if by cue. By the time we had arrived at the Tweeter Center where Slash was opening for AC/DC on the Stiff Upper Lip Tour everyone was well on their way to being a tad bit intoxicated.

After Slash’s set ended we were all hanging in the backstage dressing room with the band and crew. One needs to keep in mind that a backstage at these large outdoor amphitheatres are not what they are, at your typical concert hall, auditorium, theatre or arena. There are masses of tractor trailers and tour buses which are not in sight of the audience and the backstage is actually underneath the stage, the rooms there are quite luxurious. No graffiti or stained sofas and there isn’t trash on the floor or within its halls; they are very clean, tidy and nicely catered. Of course there is always lots of booze and groupies about.

It was getting close to the time for AC/DC to perform so we wanted to take our places in the pavilion, but there was one dilemma, we were lost in the cavern of tunnels and stairs underneath the stage. As cliché as this is going to seem, it was not unlike that scene in Spinal Tap where the band cannot find their way onstage. As a matter of fact, it was exactly like that, only here we were, a couple of boozy media fellas, wandering around and following the sound of organ music and screams of the audience.

Somehow we found our way to a stairwell and followed it up and found ourselves on AC/DC’s stage below a huge statue of Angus Young which had smoke coming out of its nostrils and a big cannon right out by the drum riser. The stage was covered in fog and all I could think was, “oh shit, we’re going to get arrested.” As I began to make a beeline for the front of the stage Mike said to me, “I’m going to go and touch the cannon.” What can I say, that’s Mike, and he did just that. I waited for a few seconds for him to get back over to me and we ran out and jumped off the front of the stage into the photo pit, just as huge explosions went off onstage behind us and the sound of deafening guitars practically blew us onto the ground. Thus had landed exactly where we stayed for the remainder of the show.

It was that hot August night when it came to me, this thing I had conceived, not 6 years earlier, MK ULTRA was getting too big for me. Too big for the people in my life, as well as my soon to be ex girlfriend Heather especially, and this thing was very much getting out of control. In retrospect that is exactly what I had dreamed would happen, but at the time I kicked it into gear, it was a dream that had seemed out of reach. Out of control was part of the job description was in not? Wine, Women and Song.

That far away teenager dream had become my day to day life.

My name is Alex Zander, and I am the Concierge to the International Sin Set.

Pittsburgh 1995 The whole thing blew up from one quote from within the very first issue and then I realized I was really onto something which would eventually bring me here to Chicago.

The Boys series went out as bloody as it began.
