The long-awaited new album by Assemblage 23, <\/strong>‘Null\u2019, is released today. The brainchild of US electro-industrial\/synth-pop artist Tom Shear<\/strong>, it is his tenth album but first since \u2018Mourn\u2019 in 2020. Home to the recent singles \u2018Tolerate\u2019 and \u2018Believe\u2019, \u2019Null’ was pre-promoted with a successful UK tour in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a literary noun, \u2018Null\u2019 means \u2018zero\u2019. “I thought it would be funny as a title for my tenth album, but I also like the fact that \u2018zero’ or \u2018nothing’ really depends on the context,\u201d <\/em>explains Shear. “If you go to the doctor after treatment and there\u2019s no more sign of cancer or whatever, that\u2019s the best possible news you can get. But, if you have no money in the bank, it has a totally negative connotation. I like that about language, about how context can completely change the meaning behind it.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shear has been releasing records as Assemblage 23 since the turn of the millennium, when his debut album \u2018Contempt\u2019 sent shockwaves through a scene that was primarily dominated by European acts. Subsequent albums helped establish him as one of the leaders of the \u2018Future Pop\u2019 movement that took hold of underground dancefloors in the early 2000s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What has always separated Shear\u2019s output from most of his contemporaries has been the deeply personal and relatable manner of his song lyrics. Often broaching difficult subjects such as suicide and depression, he has gained a significant worldwide following and performs regularly around the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
