Character actor Gailard Sartain, who appeared in nine Alan Rudolph films, dies at 81<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gailard Sartain, beloved for his two-decade run on the country-themed variety show Hee Haw<\/em>, has passed away at the age of 81.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The actor breathed his last on Thursday, June 19, at his home in his hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, his wife Mary Jo Sartain confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n

Gailard Sartain, beloved for his two-decade run on the country-themed variety show Hee Haw<\/em>, has passed away at the age of 81.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The actor breathed his last on Thursday, June 19, at his home in his hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, his wife Mary Jo Sartain confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a nod to her husband\u2019s devotion for laughter and comedy, Sartain’s wife of 36 years shared the cause of her husband\u2019s death, saying, “Actually, he died of silliness.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sartain was a widely acclaimed funny character actor with a resume spanning film, television and even cooking.<\/p>\n\n\n

He appeared in three Ernest movies and portrayed The Big Bopper in The Buddy Holly Story<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The late actor’s long standing collaboration with director Alan Rudolph resulted in nine films: Roadie, Endangered Species<\/em>, Choose Me, Songwriter, Trouble in Mind, Made in Heaven, The Moderns<\/em>, Love at Large <\/em>and Equinox.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, Sartain also worked with some of Hollywood\u2019s most revered directors, appearing in Carl Reiner\u2019s The Jerk<\/em> and All of Me<\/em>, Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s The Outsiders<\/em>, Stephen Frears\u2019 The Grifters, <\/em>Jon Avnet\u2019s Fried Green Tomatoes <\/em>and Michael Mann\u2019s Ali.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside of acting, Sartain, famous as a menacing racist sheriff in Alan Parker\u2019s Mississippi Burning, <\/em>was a multitalented creative and is survived by his wife, their children Sarah, Esther and Ben, as well as granddaughter Chloe and great-grandson Teddy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
