California-based electronic musician and sound designer CYRNAI<\/strong> (aka Carolyn Fok) has released two tracks from her forthcoming \u2018Calamity of Beauty\u2019 album as a new single today. Demonstrating the diversity of the full record, its title track is a highly atmospheric slice of neo-kosmische musik, while \u2018Pandemonium Framework\u2019 is a hypnotic slab of club-friendly industrial techno somewhat akin to a sleeker take on her already available \u2018Echo Language\u2019 single STREAM<\/a> | VIDEO<\/a> issued in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fok has made music as CYRNAI since her early teens and made several records in the 1980s that were collected in the deluxe vinyl retrospective box set \u2018CYRNAI 1980-90\u2019 issued in 2018 by the San Francisco-based darkwave label Dark Entries. She also appeared on Cherry Red\u2019s \u2018Third Noise Principle\u2019 retrospective box set of \u201870s-\u201880s US underground\/electronic music released in 2019 as part of their \u2018Close To The Noise Floor presents…\u2019 series. This was followed by live shows alongside the likes of Morton Subotnick, Suzanne Ciani and Drew McDowall, while she has also spoken on MUTEK festival panels and played more recent dates in and around San Francisco. \u2018Calamity of Beauty\u2019 is the latest stage in her renaissance as CYRNA<\/p>\n\n\n

The album reflects her ongoing fascination with communication and disconnection, with her voice taking on a spectral presence that complements the sonic landscape. The tracks are also connected via fragmented radio signals, haunting static and an enigmatic broadcast that lingers like a phantom narrative. Utilising immersive 360 degree headphone listening, \u2018Calamity Of Beauty\u2019 is a spatial audio experience that draws listeners deeper into its intricately crafted soundscapes. Or is CYRNAI reaching back, bridging past and present in an enigmatic dialogue?
