Brian James<\/strong>, founding member of THE DAMNED<\/strong>, died peacefully on Thursday, March 6, with his wife Minna<\/strong>, son Charlie<\/strong> and daughter-in-law Alicia<\/strong> by his side. He was 70 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Writer of the first-ever U.K. punk single “New Rose”<\/strong>, Brian<\/strong> was the principal songwriter of THE DAMNED<\/strong>‘s debut album, “Damned Damned Damned”<\/strong>, which was released in February 1977. Parting ways with THE DAMNED<\/strong> following the release of the group’s second album, the Nick Mason<\/strong>-produced “Music For Pleasure”<\/strong>, Brian<\/strong> created the short-lived TANZ DER YOUTH<\/strong>, before he formed THE LORDS OF THE NEW CHURCH<\/strong> with his friend and fellow rocker Stiv Bators<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a wave of excitement, headed by the twin powers of Brian James<\/strong> and Stiv Bators<\/strong>, three successful studio albums followed for THE LORD OF THE NEW CHURCH<\/strong>, spawning singles such as “Open Your Eyes”<\/strong>, “Dance With Me”<\/strong> and “Method To My Madness”<\/strong>. Always looking for new challenges and keen to work with different musicians, over the years that followed, Brian<\/strong> formed THE DRIPPING LIPS<\/strong> and guested on different records, while creating the BRIAN JAMES GANG<\/strong> and working on his solo albums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Incessantly creative and a musical tour de force, over a career which spanned more than six decades, with his music also gracing film and television soundtracks, in addition to THE DAMNED<\/strong> and THE LORDS OF THE NEW CHURCH<\/strong>, Brian<\/strong> worked with a plethora of punk and rock and roll’s finest, fromIggy Pop<\/strong> to Wayne Kramer<\/strong>, Stewart Copeland<\/strong> to Cheetah Chrome<\/strong>. Most recently, more than four decades after the release of the epoch-making “New Rose”<\/strong>, the original members of THE DAMNED<\/strong> reformed for a series of very special and emotional U.K. shows in 2022.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
